Holiday celebrations come with a lot of challenges for those going through the recovery process. Not only do many events include alcohol, but the proximity to those who may be triggering for addictions can also be challenging. There are some tricks and tips to help you get through the holidays without sacrificing the hard work and progress you’ve made in combatting your addictions.

Plan your holiday season in its entirety

By planning where you will be when, you can take control over some of the potential triggers. Is there a certain family member you shouldn’t be around while in recovery? Is there a certain venue you should avoid? Make sure you plan to spend your holidays around those who will be supportive of your recovery efforts. That will go a long way to keeping you sober.

Find a meeting and attend

Because many of us travel for the holidays, our regular schedules and routines get disrupted. While planning the season, be sure to look up meetings local to where you will be and plan on going. It will help you to maintain strength in the face of temptation and it will help you to find an outlet should you be unable to avoid those who trigger your previous coping mechanisms.

Bring a sober friend along

When you bring along a friend who is also avoiding drug and alcohol abuse, you can find additional strength if you’re starting to feel pressure. It can be difficult to avoid temptation and triggers when you’re alone. Having a buddy will also give you someone to talk to when you’re faced with temptation and triggers.

Be realistic about your expectations

Remember that even though you are sober now, it doesn’t mean that everything is perfect. It’s important to remember that even though you have changed other people probably have not changed. It will be important to remember that you cannot control other people, but you can control your reactions to other people.

Make sure you take care of yourself

It’s so important to take care of yourself while going through recovery – it’s especially important to do so when you’re spending holidays with family and friends. The holidays can be a rough time. Watch that you don’t eat too much sugar, drink too much coffee, or eat too many processed foods. Be sure to get plenty of sleep and have a plan for daily relaxation. Don’t let hunger or stress sneak up on you.

Don’t be afraid to create new traditions

Parties can be tough when you’re in recovery. Why not create new – sobriety-friendly – holiday traditions? Visiting Old Town is a local favorite! It gets you out and moving, and it’s one of those seasonal activities that can be quite festive. Have a cookie-decorating gathering.
